CHAPTER 36

The scrapyard tunnel was a tight squeeze and slanted upward. We had to crawl one by one up through the dark. Ahead of me, I could hear Solon crawling, her gauntleted arm clunking in front of her. And farther ahead, Aeria was urging her Solar Turtle forward. The girls’ silhouettes were faintly visible. Thankfully, this was just ordinary darkness, not the pure darkness of Black Ice.

“I finally managed to take a bath,” I heard her say. “And now I’m filthy again. I hate this place.”

“Just keep moving,” I said.

“Don’t tell me what to do!”

“Well, aren’t we testy today?”

“I hate being dirty,” she said.

The chute got steeper as we crawled. Soon it was tilted at a 45-degree angle. Every few minutes, either Solon or Aeria would lose their grip and come sliding on top of me. But I wasn’t complaining too much. Both of them had very soft asses.

We kept climbing until, at last, the chute leveled off. Above us was another vertical shaft. A faint grey light came from above. A rusted iron ladder led upward, but the bottom half was missing. It was a long way up. At least ten feet.

“We’ll have to boost someone,” I said.

Aeria hugged herself. “How?”

“Pyramid,” I said. “Solon, you’re the base. I’ll climb onto your shoulders. Then Aeria climbs onto mine.”

Solon nodded, her expression unchanging. She braced herself against the tunnel walls, her feet gripping the sloped floor. “I am stable.”

I climbed onto her shoulders, straddling her neck. Her shoulders were broad and very easy to sit on. As I settled my weight, Solon’s hands came up to secure me. Her cold, metal fingers clamped down, but she didn’t grab my thighs. Her hands closed right over my crotch, her metal gauntlet squeezing my package through my trousers.

“Uh, Solon … a little higher.”

“This placement provides optimal stability for your center of gravity,” she replied.

“Er, okay,” I said nervously. “Just try not to grip too hard. Something might break. Or burst.”

“Understood.”

Aeria was next. She scrambled up to Solon, using her thigh as a step. I found her wrist and hauled her up. Suddenly we were face-to-face.

“You smell funny,” she said, wrinkling her nose.

“Then you better keep climbing before I decide to kiss you,” I said.

“Joke’s on you,” she said. “I smell even worse.”

Aeria’s bare feet found my thighs, then my shoulders. She stood up slowly, her legs wobbling. My face was level with her calves.

“Look up,” said the still-naked Aeria. “And I’ll stomp on your nose. And send all three of us back down that chute.”

“Er, got it,” I said.

Her legs wobbled. I could hear her doing something above me. Then her weight lifted and she was on the ladder.

“I’m at the top,” she said, slightly out of breath. “There’s another metal grate, but I think I can open it. Just give me a moment. It’s stuck.”

I heard Aeria clang on the grate a few times. Her ankles and calves gripped my face. Sweat dripped down on me. I forced myself not to look up at her naked legs and what was between them.
